The first generation of the compact Japanese car Toyota Yaris with the in-plant marking "XP10" first appeared before the public in October 1998 at the Paris Motor Show, and a few months later entered the market. However, the precursors of the runabout were shown back in 1995 at the fairs in Frankfurt in the form of the Funtime, Funcoupe and Funcargo concepts.

The machine has gained great popularity both in Japan and abroad, and in 2005, in order to maintain success, it underwent a generation change.

The First Yaris is a compact B-class car according to the European classification, which was available in four body solutions: a three- and five-door hatchback, a two- and four-door sedan.

Depending on the modification, the length of the "Japanese" varies from 3615 to 4180 mm, and the width and height are the same in all cases - 1660 mm and 1510 mm, respectively. The small car has a wheelbase of 2370 mm.

Specifications. For the 1st generation Toyota Yaris, four power plants were offered.

  • The petrol palette combined three- and four-cylinder in-line units with distributed injection of 1.0, 1.3 and 1.5 liters, generating 68, 86 and 106 horsepower (90, 124 and 145 Nm of torque, respectively).
  • Installed on the car and 1.4-liter turbodiesel "four" with a capacity of 75 "horses", the return of which totaled 170 Nm of thrust.

The engines were mated with a 5-speed manual gearbox or 4-range automatic gearbox, as well as a front-wheel drive transmission.

The First Yaris was based on an NBC front-wheel drive platform with an independent architecture at the front and semi-independent suspension at the rear: in the first case, the MacPherson struts, in the second, the torsion beam. A hydraulic booster was used in the steering mechanism, and the braking system consisted of disc and drum devices on the front and rear wheels, respectively, with ABS.

The small car of the first generation was not officially sold in Russia, but it is still found on the roads.

Among the advantages of "Yarisov" 1998-2005 stand out: reliability, ease of control, good dynamics, ease of service, excellent maneuverability and ergonomic interior.
In contrast, they are poor soundproofing, a cramped rear sofa, a small trunk and uncertain behavior at high speeds.
