Reviews, comparisons & tips for motorists

In today's review, 2 domestic-made SUVs will be presented. Moreover, they are made by the same manufacturer and can serve roughly similar purposes.

There is nothing surprising in the fact that it is they who are put up for comparison, since both have the same transmission and gearbox, power unit, approximately the same design.

Technical features of the models

It's worth starting with the fact that both of these cars are assembled on the same assembly line. Moreover, the manufacturer itself planned to gradually transfer potential drivers from Hunter to Patriot. After the first was abandoned even by the Ministry of Defense, his days on the assembly line were numbered.

The front suspension of the old UAZ has now become spring-loaded, but the rear is still of the spring type. Thanks to this combination, the machine can easily “swallow” small potholes. Users note the new Spicer dispensing bridges, which have replaced the old, morally and technically obsolete ones.

"Hunter" is easier to operate and unpretentious in terms of maintenance. It has rather average technical characteristics, high cross-country ability and moderate fuel consumption. Add to this the excellent lifting capacity and capacity to delight country lovers and farmers.

UAZ Patriot has an all-metal body. The braking system uses disc mechanisms with a ventilation system. Also, anti-lock brakes manufactured by Bosch are installed on the Patriot. Other technical updates include an anti-roll bar and a new propeller shaft at the rear with crosspieces. The new anti-lock braking system has become a 4-channel.

Appearance

Against the background of the Hunter, which has been produced for over 40 years and has gone through more than one update, the Patriot seems to be an SUV for the majors, but this feeling is quickly lost. It is enough to look through the windows at a traffic light within the metropolis to feel its cumbersomeness and sluggishness. Unlike previous generations, even Hunter is looked at with respect and often gives way, because they fear a blow from behind.

If the Patriot assumes movement in clean clothes, then his older competitor does not allow him to remain clean. It has been repeatedly noticed that you have to get smeared with grease during boarding and disembarking. But the Patriot boasts more rounded forms of its appearance and, at the same time, it has not lost a certain brutality and aggressiveness.

Salon and trunk

Servicing UAZ Hunter in terms of washing and cleaning is much easier. Inside, there are iron seats, slightly upholstered with leatherette. No plastic, soft upholstery, or other advances in terms of comfort. The interior is easily washed out with water and detergent and dries quickly due to the fact that all the moisture leaves through the structural slots of the body.

There is a certain level of comfort in the Patriot - the seats are soft, there is a sufficient number of plastic trim elements around. Nevertheless, it is very far from the level of luxury SUVs. One of the main advantages is the presence of an air conditioner. The owner will definitely be pleased with the abundance of various boxes and shelves - hunters and fishermen can easily place a boat with a motor and a lot of other accessories here, not counting family members. Special attention should be paid to the berth, which is suitable for passengers of any height and build.

Engines and transmissions

As already mentioned at the beginning of the review, the UAZ Hunter, in comparison with the Patriot, is not far from each other in terms of technical features. It is the same type of engine that runs on gasoline and has a displacement of 2.7 liters. The maximum power rating is 128 horsepower. The highest torque value occurs at 2,500 rpm.

Comparing the Hunter to the Patriot is also appropriate in the sense that both are equipped with all-wheel drive and function with a 5-speed gearbox. The fuel tank of each of them is designed for the same volume of 72 liters. Power units are equipped with fuel injection systems, as well as neutralization of exhaust exhaust gases.

Dynamics and fuel consumption

Naturally, if we compare both of these cars by the criterion of dynamics, then the predecessor clearly loses. The Hunter holds the "hundred" well, and even 120 km / h is not a problem during overtaking, but I don't want to accelerate more because of the increasing vibration and noise in the cabin. As for the competitor, 150 km / h is not a problem for him, although it can hardly be considered a serious speed limit for modern jeeps. It is also inferior in acceleration to the first hundred - 20 seconds against 15 of its predecessor.

But the "old man" was pleasantly surprised in terms of efficiency. Even when driving on the same routes, the Patriot turned out to be more voracious. On average, it consumes 16 liters "per hundred" versus 14 for a "hunter" with exactly the same power unit. Interestingly, the data is taken from the observations of experts, while the manufacturer claims lower consumption from Patriot.

Controllability and cross-country ability

Even outside the city, on country roads, the Patriot has no desire to avoid road bumps. Moving on it, a comparison comes to mind with a cruiser, which easily absorbs pits and protrusions. The passability on the Hunter is not even worth discussing, since this is a real tank, which does not care about open water and swamps, spring floods, snow and loose earth. At the same time, you don't want to fly into the pits on it, since the stiff suspension and no less rigid interior allow you to sharply feel each of them with your body.

The Hunter's wheelbase is still less than that of its competitor - these figures are 2380 versus 2760 mm. But in terms of the height of the ground clearance, they are the same - 210 mm each. everyone. Both are fitted with the same 225/75 tires with a diameter of 16. Which is the best out of 2 SUVs for daily use? Speaking about handling and cross-country ability, we can say that Hunter will not be able to become an expeditionary according to his data, but on the off-road he has no equal. On the Patriot, you can easily go not only out of town, but also along the highway to the sea.

Security systems and other helpers

Since 2017, Patriot has been equipped with front airbags. Given the significant mass of this car, the driver will not always be able to get out of the skid only with his skill and skills. The Airbag system includes an inflatable bag with a gas generator, an impact sensor and an indicator on the dashboard.

Due to this system, the cost of the complete set increases significantly, but it justifies itself, since it reduces the risk of death by 30%. Hunter does not have these frills, so the driver should be more attentive than usual when driving on country roads. In this regard, the compared UAZs are technologically very different.

Service cost

A pleasant fact for motorists was the news of a decrease in maintenance for UAZ Patriot SUVs. The first MOT will become 2.5 times cheaper - instead of 12 thousand rubles, you will have to pay less than 5 thousand. The next maintenance will cost not 18 thousand, but a little more than 8500. These price tags already include repair, prevention and replacement of consumables, and the duration of the procedure should not exceed 1 working day.

The first maintenance on the Hunter will cost the same amount (just over 4,700 rubles). At 12 months, you will have to pay 5.5 thousand for a typewriter.The cost of subsequent prophylaxis varies from 6,300 to 20,000 rubles.

Price of all configurations

  • For the Patriot, you will have to pay from 777 to 1,118 thousand rubles, depending on one of the following configurations:
  • Classic Fleet 777 - RUB 810,000;
  • Optimum (2019) - 935,000 rubles;
  • Prestige - 1,046,000 rubles;
  • Maximum - 1,118,000 rubles.

Hunter of the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant has very few complete sets. They can be listed as follows:

  • Classic - 687 thousand rubles;
  • Classic-BDIF - 725.9 thousand rubles;
  • Jubilee - 730 thousand rubles.

Each of these trim levels comes with a 2700cc petrol powertrain.

Which car to give preference to

While the Hunter has been discontinued, its competitor has undergone a restyling and is currently being successfully produced. The Patriot is becoming more comfortable, although in terms of practicality it still leaves a lot to be desired. His choice will be justified, because in addition to updating the interior, the main innovations were the introduction of a multimedia system, a navigation system and a rear-view camera. The materials of the interior assembly have become of higher quality.

What to choose from these 2 vehicles in the end? Both of these SUVs are good for classic off-road trips, although the Hunter is simply indestructible and will become a reliable assistant when working in forests, in fields and in snow-covered areas with a harsh climate. If trips within the city or even long-distance travel are envisaged, then the Patriot of the Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant will be an ideal option - comfortable, dynamic, modern, equipped with security and air conditioning systems.
